Social Critic: Lila Shahani

(Image taken from Los Angeles Times / Photo taken by Mike Alquinto for the Times)

Great article out of the Los Angeles Times about a self-proclaimed social critic who has stirred the pot with her commentaries on "the intrigues" of the Philippines (John Glionna). These intrigues that John Glionna writes about in his article appear so vividly in the minds of Filipinos, and those that have left the Philippines, because of the dramatic colors used to paint such a controversial painting. The Philippines is raw. It can be unforgiving and it can change your view of the world as you have come to learn and know about it.

I've come to learn about the Philippines from stories told by family and friends, people on the street and at restaurants. They tell of a Philippines shrouded with a veil of uncertainty and mystery. Others tell of a celebratory Philippine country filled with proud nationalists. What surprises me the most is that Lila Shahani tells of an island world not too far distant from the one I've come to know and love here in the Americas.

It's another day of survival on this earth. Why not read about how one of your sisters sees the world? (Please copy and paste: http://www.latimes.com/news/custom/topofthetimes/topstories/la-fg-philippines-blogger-20100508,0,3193797.story)
