In an article out of the New York Times yesterday, writer Peter S. Goodman defines a new shift in social classes in lieu of the failed economy. Before 2008, it was as simple as poor, middle, rich. Today, a new class begins to rise (or fall - depending on how you choose to look at it). Goodman introduces "the new poor" - "people long accustomed to the comforts of middle-class life who are now relying on public assistance for the first time in their lives -- potentially for years to come."
