In a confectionary-driven society such as Los Angeles, cupcakes always take the cake. But how do you compete with such a broad market when everyone's got their own red velvet recipe and long lines patiently waiting out the door for a bite of a cup-shaped morsel?
Sex - it always sells.
BIGMANbakes, which opened to much laud last September 2009 in downtown's Old Bank District, is quickly becoming the new "it" joint in downtown. But it's not the promise of sweet satisfaction of their red velvet cupcake nor their black & white interior that is drawing patrons, it's their sex appeal.
I happened upon BIGMANbakes while traipsing along the streets of ArtWalk last night and was "turned on" by its mass appeal to a more masculine-friendly clientele. Their menu is only 6 cupcakes long and while Sprinkles and Crumbs customers swear "more is better", BIGMANbakes can and will get by with just a handful of "tricks" up their sleeve. Sex oozes out of their simple packaging, smartly designed collateral and their carefully picked, mostly female, work-staff who - arms inviting, had an extra layer of red lipstick swiped-on waiting for the next "easy" customer. It's smart advertising.
William "Chip" Brown is the head of this operation and takes pride in the delicate nature of such a "sweetly-driven" camp because he himself is a towering monster at 6'-5". He's going to have to open up another location soon because he's got to "spread the love". =)
